The Illusion of the Doer
The Sanatan way of Living offers a solution to the weight of our own actions. In the journey of a true yogi householder, one must learn to perform all daily activities while remaining detached. Maya (illusion) and the ego deceive us by insisting that we are the doers and that we are solely responsible for the outcomes of our actions. This attachment to doer-ship causes suffering and the fixation on the outcome causes suffering.
Attachment is Suffering
When we believe we are the orchestrators of our fate, we are dragged into the endless-volatility of emotion. We become consumed by worry, depression, anger, guilt, or a victim mentality. Why consciously step into this Hell? Why allow these heavy, dense layers of Maya (illusion) to cover and obscure your Yogic Self or Higher Self?
Separating the Yogic and Physical Self
To navigate this world without being flattened by its weight, it is important to understand that the Yogic Self (the Higher Self) and the Physical Self (the Incarnated Self) are meant to be separate. Just as you must separate your work life from your personal home life to maintain balance, you must divide your spiritual awareness from your physical actions.
The Physical Self is tasked with taking action and navigating the material world, but the Yogic Self must simply observe with detachment. To cultivate peace, practice being there as a witness (Sakshi) while the action is happening, and not identifying as the one doing the action. Whenever you get sucked into the heavy energies of anxiety or shame, that is the signal to go back into the Observer; and detach from the doing and from the outcome of doing.
Surrender
The recipe for inner peace requires a fundamental, internal shift: you must burn the "I" of the Physical Self to ashes. There can be no peace as long as the "I" remains inside. How is this achieved? Through inner surrender. When you truly surrender, there is no personal self left.
Surrender yourself completely to the Divine; and then simply let go.
Do what is required of you in your life, perform your duty.
Give tremendous effort and leave the results entirely to the Divine.
Remember always that the Divine is the true Doer.
Always practice being the observer. Do not do anything as the doer. Whatever actions your life demands of you today, simply be there as an observer.
